Sakamoto Days – Episode 1 Recap

Spread the love

Episode 1 of Sakamoto Days wastes no time introducing one of the most unconventional protagonists in recent anime—Taro Sakamoto, a former legendary hitman who has traded in bullets for bargains.

We open with a glimpse into Sakamoto’s past life—an elite assassin feared across the underworld for his unmatched skills and efficiency. But that life is long behind him. In the present day, Sakamoto runs a small neighborhood convenience store, living peacefully with his wife and daughter. He’s noticeably… different now—softer, rounder—but still carries that quiet, intimidating presence beneath the surface.

The calm doesn’t last long.

Enter Shin, a telepath and former associate from Sakamoto’s assassin days. Shin tracks him down with one mission: bring Sakamoto back into the world he left behind. But what he finds instead is a man fully committed to his new life—one built on family, routine, and a strict no-killing rule.

Of course, the past doesn’t let go so easily.

When danger follows Shin to the store, the episode quickly shifts gears. What looks like an ordinary shop becomes the stage for some slick, creative action. Sakamoto effortlessly handles threats using whatever’s around him—pens, groceries, shelves—showing that even out of shape, his instincts and skill are still razor sharp.

The real hook of the episode isn’t just the action—it’s the contrast. Sakamoto isn’t trying to be the strongest anymore. He’s trying to be normal. Every fight, every decision is driven by one simple goal: protect his peaceful life and the people he loves.

By the end of the episode, Shin witnesses firsthand the kind of man Sakamoto has become—and begins to understand that strength isn’t just about killing. It’s about what you choose to protect.

My thoughts:

As a father to be in just a week or two Sakamoto days makes me feel young and like I’ll never grow old than even when I do I’ll still have the ability to whoop these young kids into shape. This is an absolute classic out of the gate and I’m super excited, not only for the anime and catching up all the way, but the upcoming Union arena set for this is gonna be absolutely incredible. Sakamoto for sure is gonna be my favorite character and I see a lot of myself and him as far as his laid back demeanor but also willingness to get busy if needed love love love love love this show so far can’t wait to finish it all up. 🙂
