Episode 2 of Chainsaw Man picks up right where the chaos left off, shifting from raw survival to something a bit more… structured.
Denji wakes up in an unfamiliar place after his brutal encounter, now under the watch of Makima—a calm, composed figure who quickly establishes control over the situation. Instead of fear or hostility, she offers Denji a choice that isn’t really a choice: join the Public Safety Devil Hunters… or face elimination. Naturally, Denji chooses to live.
What follows is a mix of dark humor and unsettling tone-setting. Denji, who’s spent his entire life barely surviving, is suddenly introduced to basic comforts—food, shelter, and a sense of purpose. His motivations are hilariously simple, but they also highlight just how deprived he’s been.
We also get a glimpse into how the world operates beyond Denji’s perspective. The Public Safety organization isn’t just fighting devils—they’re managing them, studying them, and using people like Denji as tools. The episode subtly builds this uneasy dynamic, especially in how Makima interacts with him. There’s kindness… but also something colder underneath.
By the end, Denji is assigned his first official partner, Aki Hayakawa, whose serious and disciplined nature immediately clashes with Denji’s carefree attitude. Their interaction sets up a classic tension that promises both conflict and growth moving forward.
My thoughts:
And of course, two episodes in the very beginning frames of the episode our main character falls deeply in love and is reborn in this new life where his savior is also who he has a crush on. And before we know it there’s a second option for him to fall in love with his new partner who is also tasked with hunting dates. Looks like his 10 out of 10 might be a 20 out of 10 if he can survive both of their goals for him.
