Tokyo Revengers has made a splash in the anime world, capturing viewers with its unique blend of gang drama, time travel, and a deep dive into the complex lives of troubled youth. Season 1, Episode 1, titled “Reborn,” sets the stage for an exhilarating story of redemption, love, and the desperate quest to change the past.
Plot Summary: The Downfall of Takemichi Hanagaki
The episode opens by introducing us to Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old part-timer living a life of despair. Disillusioned with his dead-end job, he’s resigned to a monotonous existence. His life takes a sudden turn when he learns that his middle school girlfriend, Hinata Tachibana, and her younger brother Naoto, have been killed by the notorious Tokyo Manji Gang.
This tragic news shakes Takemichi to his core, triggering a flood of memories from his youth. As he reminisces, we are transported back to his middle school days—his golden years when he was part of a gang, carefree, and dating the beautiful Hinata.
However, his nostalgic trip down memory lane is cut short when Takemichi is suddenly pushed onto the train tracks in an apparent accident. Just as he’s about to meet his end, something miraculous happens—he finds himself transported 12 years into the past, back to his middle school days.
A Second Chance
Upon realizing he’s time-traveled, Takemichi sees this as an opportunity to change the future and prevent the deaths of Hinata and Naoto. His first instinct is to find Naoto, Hinata’s younger brother, who he confides in about the future. Takemichi’s earnest plea and foresight convince Naoto of the impending danger. They make a pact: Takemichi will try to alter the course of history to save Hinata, and Naoto, in return, will protect his sister at all costs.
As Takemichi returns to the present, he discovers that his actions have already made an impact. Naoto, now alive and a police officer, is waiting for him. The two discuss the consequences of Takemichi’s time-leaping abilities and begin plotting their next steps to save Hinata.
Themes: Redemption and the Burden of Responsibility
The first episode masterfully sets up the series’ core themes of redemption and the burden of responsibility. Takemichi’s initial reaction to being thrown back in time is one of disbelief, but as the reality of his situation sinks in, so does his resolve to change the course of his life and the lives of those he loves.
The episode also hints at the larger, more complex world of gang violence and the influence of the Tokyo Manji Gang, which will be explored further as the series progresses. Takemichi’s journey is not just about saving Hinata but also about confronting his past mistakes, standing up to his former oppressors, and reclaiming his lost pride.

My Thoughts:
This anime reminds me of the good ole days of middle school and high school where hormones are raging and teenage boys just want to physically fight things out.
So far it’s clear that the different years (or grades) are what define your social group or who you rock with.
The main character is a first year and is trying to avoid getting his ass kicked bu the third years while wreaking havoc on the second years. An awesome cycle of violence and fighting is brewing.
Ironically I just got done watching Steins; Gate and similarly the main character also time travels.
