Introduction:
Mob Psycho 100 is one of those rare anime that manages to balance intense action, deep emotional resonance, and quirky humor all at once. Created by ONE, the same mind behind One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 introduces us to a world where psychic powers are real, but they come with a heavy burden. Season 1 Episode 1, titled “Self-Proclaimed Psychic: Reigen Arataka And Mob,” sets the stage for this unique story by introducing us to its eclectic cast of characters, the central themes, and the beautifully animated world.
The Episode Overview:
The episode opens with a chaotic scene of supernatural mayhem, instantly immersing viewers into a world where spirits and curses are everyday occurrences. We’re introduced to Reigen Arataka, a self-proclaimed psychic and the owner of the Spirits and Such Consultation Office. Despite his grandiose claims, it becomes apparent that Reigen is nothing more than a con artist with no real psychic abilities. However, what he lacks in supernatural powers, he more than makes up for with his quick wit and resourcefulness.
As Reigen fumbles his way through a job to exorcise a spirit haunting a tunnel, we meet the episode’s true star: Shigeo Kageyama, better known as Mob. Mob is a seemingly ordinary middle school student with extraordinary psychic abilities. Despite his immense power, Mob is soft-spoken, socially awkward, and profoundly concerned about living a normal life.
Character Introductions:
Reigen Arataka quickly establishes himself as a comedic yet somehow endearing figure. His ridiculousness is highlighted through his attempts to handle spirits with techniques like “Salt Splash,” which is nothing more than him throwing table salt at spirits, and yet his sincerity in helping his clients makes him a character you can’t help but root for. His relationship with Mob is especially intriguing. While Reigen clearly exploits Mob’s abilities for his business, there’s an underlying sense of mentorship and care that adds depth to his character.
Mob, on the other hand, is portrayed as a walking contradiction. Despite his powerful abilities, he’s shy, unconfident, and desperately wants to be more than just a psychic. This internal struggle is a central theme in the series, and it’s introduced subtly in this first episode. Mob’s stoic demeanor contrasts sharply with the chaos around him, and it’s this contrast that makes him such a compelling protagonist.
Themes and Symbolism:
The episode dives into several themes that will resonate throughout the series. One of the most prominent is the idea of self-worth and identity. Mob’s desire to fit in and live a normal life, despite his overwhelming power, speaks to a broader human experience. It raises the question of what truly defines us—is it our abilities, our desires, or the way we relate to others?
The episode also subtly touches on the exploitation of power. Reigen, while not malicious, uses Mob’s abilities for his gain. This dynamic sets the stage for future exploration of how power is perceived and used by those who possess it and those who don’t.
Animation and Art Style:
One of the standout aspects of Mob Psycho 100 is its unique animation style. The first episode showcases the series’ ability to switch between simple, almost crude, art for comedic moments, and fluid, dynamic animation during action scenes. The transition from Reigen’s goofy antics to Mob’s psychic battles is seamless, and the animation quality elevates the storytelling, adding a visual layer to the narrative’s emotional depth.
The use of color is particularly noteworthy. The episode is filled with vibrant hues during psychic battles, which contrasts with the more muted tones of Mob’s everyday life. This color contrast not only emphasizes the difference between the ordinary and the extraordinary but also mirrors Mob’s internal conflict between his desire for normalcy and the reality of his powers.
Final Thoughts:
Season 1 Episode 1 of Mob Psycho 100 does an excellent job of setting up the series. It introduces the main characters, establishes the world, and hints at deeper themes that will be explored as the story progresses. The blend of humor, action, and introspection makes it a compelling watch, even for those who might not typically gravitate toward supernatural anime.
The episode leaves viewers with a strong sense of curiosity—who is Mob, really? What will happen when his emotions reach 100%? And how will his relationship with Reigen evolve? These questions are more than enough to hook anyone into watching the next episode.
Whether you’re a fan of action, comedy, or character-driven stories, Mob Psycho 100 offers something for everyone, and this first episode is the perfect introduction to the wild, emotional journey that lies ahead.
My Thoughts:
Not going to lie I fell asleep watching this one but was really excited to hit rewind and restart it. I’m definitely not onto the plot or “where things are going”, but one weird thing I liked was the narrator stating exactly who the protagonist was in the beginning.
I feel like I’ve used that word in so many of my anime recaps so far; currently around 60 or so, and it makes it easier to use words like antagonist, protagonist, hero and heroine instead of typing out full names sometimes 🙂
Mob, the main character seems to be a psychic slave to his master but he uses him for good, primarily fighting evil, even more socially haunted things and spirits.
