Fruits Basket Season 1, Episode 3 Recap: “Let’s Play Rich Man-Poor Man”

Spread the love

Episode 3 of Fruits Basket, titled “Let’s Play Rich Man-Poor Man,” brings a lighter, more playful tone as we see Tohru settling into her new life with the Sohma family. This episode introduces more of the Sohmas and highlights the developing dynamics between the characters, blending comedy with heartfelt moments.

The Newcomers: Kagura Sohma

The episode begins with the arrival of Kagura Sohma, another member of the cursed Sohma family. Kagura is the boar of the Chinese zodiac, and her introduction is anything but subtle. She’s deeply infatuated with Kyo and expresses her love in an aggressive yet endearing way, often to Kyo’s dismay. Kagura’s presence brings a new dynamic to the household, as she oscillates between being incredibly sweet and comically violent, especially when it comes to Kyo.

A Game of Rich Man-Poor Man

The title of the episode refers to a card game that Tohru, Yuki, Kyo, and Kagura play together. This simple activity becomes a metaphor for their relationships—filled with competitiveness, teasing, and the occasional outburst. The game showcases the different personalities at play: Yuki’s calm and composed nature, Kyo’s fiery temper, Kagura’s passionate outbursts, and Tohru’s gentle demeanor that seems to hold everything together.

Throughout the game, we see more of the Sohmas’ interactions and how Tohru’s presence has begun to influence them. The episode beautifully captures how small moments can strengthen bonds, with each character revealing more of themselves, even through something as simple as a card game.

Embracing the Chaos

Kagura’s arrival and her dynamic with Kyo highlight the complexity of the relationships within the Sohma family. Despite the chaos she brings, it’s clear that there’s a deep bond between Kagura and Kyo, albeit one that is fraught with misunderstandings and unresolved feelings. Tohru, as always, plays the role of the empathetic observer, bringing a sense of calm and understanding to the group.

The episode ends on a light-hearted note, with Tohru expressing her happiness at being part of the Sohma family, even if only temporarily. Her kindness and positivity continue to leave a lasting impact on everyone around her.

Final Thoughts

“Let’s Play Rich Man-Poor Man” is a delightful episode that balances humor with character development. It introduces new elements to the story while continuing to explore the relationships between the main characters. Kagura’s introduction adds another layer to the already complex dynamics within the Sohma family, and Tohru’s influence continues to grow, making this episode a must-watch for fans of the series.

My Thoughts:

I can’t believe in the beginning of episode three the “Cat” wishes he had the gifts and glory of his counterpart “Rat”.  What a world we live in!  I would definitely be the nimble cat first!

The storyline progresses nicely. I like this as a cool calming and relaxing anime. Enough twists and turns to keep me interested but not constant blood and battle lol
