Kirito is called to investigate a mysterious death that occurred within a safe zone—an area in Sword Art Online where players are supposed to be protected from harm. The case shocks everyone, as players shouldn’t be able to die there, and yet a female player named Yolko is found dead under suspicious circumstances.
As Kirito digs deeper, he learns that the victim was part of a now-disbanded guild called the “Golden Apple,” which had suffered a tragic loss months prior when one of their members died in a dungeon due to a decision made by the group. Tension and guilt linger among the surviving members.
While trying to piece things together, another member of the old guild seemingly dies before Kirito and Asuna’s eyes. It begins to look like someone is targeting the former guildmates as part of a revenge plot. Eventually, Kirito uncovers that the supposed deaths were staged using teleport crystals and sleight of hand. The “victims” faked their deaths to flush out the real murderer—Griselda’s husband, who had her killed for virtual loot.
The episode explores the themes of justice, guilt, and betrayal, while highlighting the psychological strain of being trapped in a virtual world where emotions and consequences are very real.
My Thoughts:
I love how this episode is titled with the word “avenger” in it as that’s exactly what I was hoping would happen after the tragedy in episode 5.
