Death Note Season 1 Episode 3: “Dealings” – The First Signs of Strain

Spread the love

In “Dealings,” the third episode of Death Note, the pressure begins to mount for Light Yagami as he juggles his dual life as a high school student and Kira. The episode delves deeper into Light’s psyche and introduces a new challenge that threatens to unravel his carefully constructed plan.

The Family Dynamic

The episode provides a glimpse into Light’s family life, particularly his relationship with his father, Soichiro Yagami, who happens to be a high-ranking officer in the National Police Agency. This relationship adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, as Light must now be cautious of his actions to avoid arousing suspicion. The tension between Light’s public persona and his secret identity as Kira is palpable, especially when he learns that his father is involved in the investigation to catch Kira.

The FBI Investigation

To tighten the noose around Kira, L enlists the help of the FBI to monitor key suspects, including Light. This move marks the beginning of L’s direct involvement in narrowing down the suspects. Light, ever the strategist, quickly becomes aware of the surveillance and devises a plan to eliminate the agents without exposing himself. This marks the first significant test of Light’s cunning as he tries to outmaneuver L and the authorities.

Ryuk’s Role

Ryuk, the Shinigami who dropped the Death Note into the human world, continues to be an intriguing character. In this episode, Ryuk explains the concept of the Shinigami eyes, which allow the user to see a person’s name and lifespan just by looking at them. Ryuk offers this deal to Light, but at the cost of half his remaining lifespan. Light’s refusal reveals his determination to rely solely on his intellect rather than resorting to supernatural shortcuts, further highlighting his arrogance and belief in his superiority.

Final Thoughts

“Dealings” deepens the narrative by adding new layers of tension and introducing significant challenges for Light. The episode explores the psychological strain that comes with living a double life, while also setting up future conflicts that will test Light’s resolve and intelligence. As the net begins to close in on Kira, viewers are left wondering how long Light can maintain his facade.

My Thoughts:

Episode 3 is all about Akira Vs L. Both don’t know each other but seem to be one and the same.  The last line of the previous episode was both of them proclaiming that they in fact were the true hero fighting for what is right and virtuous.

L is starting to detect certain clues about Kira and makes it known that he is on his trail!

This is starting to be a very genius show similar to the reasons I like Dr Stone.  He is thinking 5-10 moves ahead and it’s definitely a chess-style game with multiple dimensions.

I’m loving this show so far.  Be sure to check out Episode 3 of Death Note and leave your thoughts below in the comments section.
