Title: Unraveling Mysteries: Meet the Brilliant Rampo Edogawa in Episode 4 of Bungo Stray Dogs
Episode 4 of Bungo Stray Dogs takes a slight detour from the main plot to introduce one of the most intriguing members of the Armed Detective Agency—Rampo Edogawa. Known as the agency’s “greatest detective,” Rampo’s abilities and personality add a new flavor to the series. This episode is a clever mix of mystery, humor, and character exploration, giving viewers a glimpse into what makes the Armed Detective Agency truly unique.
Rampo Edogawa: The Self-Proclaimed Genius
Rampo’s character is larger than life, with a personality to match. He claims to be a genius detective, capable of solving any mystery without fail. What sets Rampo apart is his confidence—he’s so certain of his abilities that he refuses to even consider the possibility of being wrong. This arrogance, however, is backed up by his exceptional deductive skills, which border on the supernatural.
The Mystery of the Locked Room
The episode revolves around a classic locked-room mystery, where a murder seems impossible to have occurred without the culprit being caught. It’s up to Rampo to solve the case, and he does so with flair, unraveling the mystery in a way that leaves everyone else in awe. The brilliance of this episode lies in how it showcases Rampo’s deductive prowess while also injecting humor into the narrative.
Themes of Perception and Reality
One of the underlying themes of this episode is the difference between perception and reality. Rampo’s ability to see through deception and uncover the truth is a metaphor for the idea that things are not always what they seem. This theme resonates with the larger narrative of the series, where characters often hide their true selves behind masks.
My Thoughts:
Episode 4 starts out with the Black Lizard Group (essentially the Port Mafia’s special ops team) commits what can only be described as a massacre to let their opponents know the war is on and not to challenge them.
Exactly as I predicted the action is finally picking up and it’s getting good; I’m seeing why this was recommended to me. When given the chance to “call off the war” he freezes and refuses, so the action will continue. The only way to protect the Agency and their members in Atsushi’s mind is to remove himself (as he carries a 7 billion yen bounty on his head – reminds be of Vash The Stampede from Trigun)
Unfortunately even with him removing himself the decision is made to wipe the entire agency first and then he will be easier to capture or kill.
To everyone’s surprise; or at least Atsushi, the super scary Port Mafia guys get their asses handed to them as he runs back to the agency, and realizes he is on the right side of the battle and in fact has some strength with the Agency.
