Title: Tears of a Clown

Introduction

The third episode of “Bartender: Glass of God” brings us a tale that delves into the duality of human emotion—how joy and sorrow can often coexist within a single soul. Ryuu Sasakura’s intuitive bartending skills are once again on display as he encounters a unique customer whose outward appearance masks a deep internal struggle.

Episode Summary

Episode 3 introduces us to Takashi, a young man who makes a living as a professional clown. On the surface, he’s a source of joy and laughter, entertaining children and adults alike with his antics and colorful persona. However, as we quickly learn, Takashi’s cheerful exterior hides a heart weighed down by personal sorrow and unfulfilled dreams.

After a particularly exhausting day, Takashi finds himself drawn to Eden Hall, seeking solace from the emotional burden he’s been carrying. As he takes a seat at the bar, still partially in his clown makeup, Ryuu can sense the melancholy that lingers beneath the surface.

Takashi opens up about his life, sharing how he had once aspired to be a serious actor. But life’s circumstances led him down a different path, one where he brings joy to others but often struggles to find happiness himself. His smile, painted on for the world to see, has become a mask that hides his true feelings.

Understanding Takashi’s need for emotional release, Ryuu decides to prepare a cocktail that will help him confront his inner turmoil—a Clover Club. This classic cocktail, with its blend of gin, lemon juice, raspberry syrup, and egg white, is known for its delicate balance of sweet and sour flavors, mirroring the bittersweet nature of Takashi’s life.

As Takashi sips the Clover Club, the bittersweet taste resonates deeply with him. The drink acts as a catalyst, allowing Takashi to acknowledge his pain while also appreciating the joy he brings to others. Through Ryuu’s careful guidance, Takashi learns that it’s okay to embrace both sides of his emotions, and that his ability to make others happy is a gift, even if it comes with its own set of challenges.

Analysis

Episode 3 highlights the theme of emotional duality, a concept that is often overlooked in a world that tends to favor overt displays of happiness. Takashi’s story reminds us that the people who seem the happiest on the outside may be carrying the heaviest burdens. The episode underscores the importance of emotional authenticity, showing how acknowledging one’s true feelings can lead to a deeper understanding of oneself.

Ryuu’s choice of the Clover Club cocktail is significant, as it reflects the complexity of Takashi’s emotions. The drink’s blend of sweet and sour ingredients serves as a metaphor for the coexistence of joy and sorrow in Takashi’s life. This episode beautifully illustrates how a well-crafted drink can not only provide comfort but also facilitate emotional healing.

Conclusion

In Episode 3 of “Bartender: Glass of God,” the narrative continues to explore the human condition through the lens of bartending. Takashi’s story is a poignant reminder that even those who bring joy to others may struggle with their own inner demons. Through the artistry of Ryuu’s bartending, Takashi is able to confront his emotions and find a sense of balance in his life. This episode is a testament to the power of empathy, understanding, and the subtle magic that lies within a perfectly crafted cocktail.

My Thoughts:

The refinement of the drinks and the characters alike are second to none in this impeccably smooth anime.

Our main protagonist is getting a bit cockier with his drink making ability and starts to go a little harder in this episode.

In fact episode 3 is the first time we see a true 1v1 bartender showdown!

A lot is learned in this first showdown including the difference of making a custom drink for an individual or a staple so good anyone would love it
