Tokyo Ghoul Season 1, Episode 2: “Incubation”

Spread the love

Introduction
Following the shocking events of the first episode, Episode 2 of Tokyo Ghoul, titled “Incubation,” delves deeper into Kaneki’s transformation. The episode explores his initial struggle to accept his new identity as a half-ghoul, the horror of his altered cravings, and the introduction of new, key characters who will shape his journey.

Kaneki’s Internal Conflict
Kaneki’s internal struggle is the focal point of this episode. After surviving Rize’s attack and the life-saving surgery that made him a half-ghoul, Kaneki faces a horrifying realization: he can no longer consume normal food. The episode does an excellent job of portraying Kaneki’s desperation as he tries to force himself to eat, only to find that everything but human flesh now repulses him. This serves as a metaphor for his loss of innocence and the beginning of his tragic descent into the world of ghouls.

The Introduction of Touka Kirishima
As Kaneki grapples with his new reality, we are introduced to Touka Kirishima, a ghoul who works at the Anteiku coffee shop. Unlike the monstrous Rize, Touka initially comes off as a cold and aloof character. However, she soon becomes an essential figure in Kaneki’s life. Touka embodies the duality of the ghoul existence—she’s both a predator and a protector, showing Kaneki that survival in this world is about more than just feeding his new cravings; it’s about maintaining a delicate balance between his human and ghoul sides.

The World of Ghouls Expands
Episode 2 also expands the world of ghouls, introducing the concept of “ghoul society” and the various factions within it. We learn that not all ghouls are mindless killers like Rize; some, like those associated with Anteiku, have found ways to coexist with humans. This revelation begins to shift Kaneki’s—and the viewers’—understanding of what it means to be a ghoul, hinting at the moral complexities that will become central to the series.

Kaneki’s First Taste of Flesh
One of the most harrowing moments in “Incubation” is Kaneki’s first taste of human flesh. Driven by unbearable hunger and the need to survive, Kaneki reluctantly consumes a piece of flesh offered by Nishiki, a ghoul who taunts him. This act marks a pivotal moment in Kaneki’s transformation, signifying his first real step into the ghoul world. The episode ends on this disturbing note, leaving viewers to ponder the implications of Kaneki’s new existence.

Conclusion
Episode 2 of Tokyo Ghoul is a powerful exploration of identity, survival, and the harsh realities of Kaneki’s new life. It deepens the psychological horror of the series while introducing key characters and concepts that will drive the story forward. As Kaneki takes his first steps into the world of ghouls, the series promises a complex narrative that challenges our perceptions of humanity and monstrosity.

My Thoughts:

This episode we get a really good insight as to what in the world is going on. Our main protagonist has fully realized the true nature of his predicament.

He is not a human anymore, but he is also not a full ghoul yet either.  He wasn’t fully “turned into a ghoul”, but had ghoul organs put into him after a life altering accident.  This half predicament leaves him eerily screwed when coming to things like blood and feasting as he needs it as a fuel source but fully understands the cannibalistic side of the act too.
