Fruits Basket Season 1, Episode 4 Recap: “Here Comes Kagura!”

Spread the love

Episode 4 of Fruits Basket, titled “Here Comes Kagura!,” delves deeper into the chaotic yet endearing relationship between Kagura and Kyo, while also shedding light on the emotional complexities of the Sohma family curse. This episode balances comedy and drama as it explores the past and present of Kyo and Kagura’s bond.

A Heartfelt Flashback

The episode opens with Kagura continuing her whirlwind visit to the Sohma household, much to Kyo’s chagrin. While Kagura’s over-the-top affection for Kyo provides plenty of laughs, we soon learn that there’s more to their relationship than meets the eye. Through a series of flashbacks, the episode reveals that Kagura and Kyo have known each other since childhood, and Kagura’s feelings for Kyo stem from a deep-seated desire to protect and be with him.

These flashbacks add layers to Kagura’s character, showing that her aggressive behavior is a way of expressing her love and concern for Kyo, who has always been an outsider within the Sohma family due to his association with the cat—the outcast of the zodiac. Kagura’s determination to stand by Kyo, despite his struggles, adds a poignant touch to their interactions.

The Curse’s Weight

The flashbacks also touch on the darker side of the Sohma family curse, particularly how it has affected Kyo. The episode hints at the internal turmoil Kyo faces, not just because of his temper, but also because of the heavy burden he carries as the cat—a burden that Kagura tries to help him bear. Tohru, who witnesses these interactions, continues to learn more about the depth of the Sohma family’s pain and the complexities of their relationships.

A Day of Fun and Reflection

Despite the emotional undertones, the episode isn’t without its light-hearted moments. Kagura, determined to spend quality time with Kyo, drags him on a series of “dates,” including shopping and cooking together. These scenes are filled with humor as Kyo reluctantly goes along with Kagura’s plans, and Tohru’s reactions add an extra layer of warmth to the proceedings.

The episode concludes with Tohru reflecting on the strong bond between Kagura and Kyo, as well as her growing desire to help the Sohmas in any way she can. Her empathy and kindness continue to be the glue that holds the group together, as she becomes more deeply involved in their lives.

Final Thoughts

“Here Comes Kagura!” offers a deeper look into the emotional lives of the Sohmas, particularly Kyo and Kagura. The episode expertly balances humor and drama, providing viewers with both laughter and moments of reflection. Kagura’s love for Kyo, while often expressed in an exaggerated manner, is rooted in genuine care and concern, adding another layer of complexity to the story. This episode is a perfect blend of character development and entertainment, making it a standout in the series so far.

My Thoughts:

The two main characters get really close and start developing their relationship in this episode.

Lover boy and lover girl seem to be getting through school and life just fine together; if only she won’t keep talking about the cat thing.  He has to remind her of how close she keeps coming to having her memory erased if she “blabs” the family secret of the boys.

The sad part is at the end she admits she doesn’t think she can fool herself into being a part of such a special family as such an ordinary girl.

Hopefully they will reunite in the near future episodes!
