In Episode 2 of Fruits Basket, titled “They’re All Animals!,” we dive deeper into the Sohma family’s curse and Tohru Honda’s new life living with them. We see her adjusting to living with Yuki, Shigure, and Kyo, despite the occasional mishap—like accidentally hugging one of them and triggering their transformation. Meanwhile, Kyo struggles to fit in, feeling like an outsider due to being the cat—a non-zodiac member. His fiery temper often leads to clashes with Yuki, but Tohru’s kind and understanding nature slowly starts to break down his walls. We also get a glimpse into the more serious side of the curse, as it’s hinted that the Sohmas carry a deep emotional burden due to their transformations.
A Growing Friendship
Tohru’s relationship with the Sohma family grows stronger, particularly with Yuki. Despite his reserved and princely demeanor, Yuki begins to open up to Tohru, sharing bits and pieces of his feelings about the curse. The episode does an excellent job of balancing humor with deeper emotional moments, showcasing how Tohru’s presence is already beginning to impact the Sohmas’ lives.
The episode ends with Tohru reaffirming her promise to keep their secret and expressing her gratitude for the kindness they’ve shown her. Her warmth and sincerity are slowly but surely healing the wounds that the Sohmas have carried for so long.
Final Thoughts
“They’re All Animals!” continues to build on the heartfelt foundation laid in the first episode, introducing viewers to the complexities of the Sohma family curse while deepening the bonds between Tohru and the Sohmas. The episode masterfully blends light-hearted moments with hints of the underlying sorrow that the characters experience, making it clear that Fruits Basket is not just a story about transformation but about acceptance, friendship, and healing.
My Thoughts:
In this episode our female protagonist gets more acquainted with her new male housemates and learns more of their deep and dark past.
Apparently similar to Men In Black the house boys have to erase people’s memories if they “know too much” about their secret (of being transformed back and forth from different animals.
She keeps the secret and her memory so far?
