The Aftermath of Destruction

Episode 2 of “Attack on Titan,” titled “That Day: The Fall of Shiganshina, Part 2,” continues the harrowing tale of humanity’s struggle against the Titans. The immediate aftermath of the Colossal Titan’s attack on Shiganshina is depicted with unflinching brutality, setting a grim tone for the series.

Eren’s Resolve

The episode delves deeper into the psyche of our protagonist, Eren Yeager. Traumatized by the death of his mother and the destruction of his home, Eren’s resolve to fight the Titans intensifies. His determination is palpable, and it becomes clear that his drive to eradicate the Titans will be a central theme in the series.

The Military’s Response

As the Titans breach Wall Maria, the military’s response is one of desperation and chaos. The evacuation of Shiganshina’s residents highlights the dire situation humanity faces. The Survey Corps, the Garrison, and the Military Police all play pivotal roles in the evacuation, showcasing their differing priorities and capabilities.

Mikasa and Armin’s Struggles

Mikasa and Armin also begin to show their character development in this episode. Mikasa’s stoic determination to protect Eren contrasts with Armin’s fear and self-doubt. However, Armin’s quick thinking and strategic mind become evident, hinting at his future importance.

A Glimpse into the Past

Flashbacks provide a glimpse into Eren, Mikasa, and Armin’s childhood, revealing the bonds that tie them together. These scenes add emotional depth to their characters, making their current struggles even more poignant.

A New Refuge

The refugees from Shiganshina are relocated to the inner walls, but safety comes at a cost. The scarcity of resources and the harsh conditions in the refugee camps paint a bleak picture of humanity’s plight. Eren’s burning desire for revenge is mirrored by the despair and hopelessness of those around him.

Eren’s Father and the Basement

A crucial plot point is introduced in this episode: Eren’s father, Dr. Grisha Yeager, and the mysterious basement in their former home. Dr. Yeager’s disappearance and the key he gives Eren hint at secrets that could change the course of humanity’s battle against the Titans.

Conclusion: Setting the Stage for Rebellion

“That Day: The Fall of Shiganshina, Part 2” sets the stage for the characters’ rebellion against their grim reality. The episode’s blend of emotional depth, character development, and world-building ensures that viewers are fully invested in the story. As Eren, Mikasa, and Armin vow to fight back, the stage is set for an epic tale of survival and resistance.

My Thoughts:

Episode 2 of AOT, Attack on Titan is also part 2 of the intro to the anime and man it does not disappoint. We see sheer and utter destruction in every possible way imaginable: emotionally, spiritually and definitely physically. These ginormous monsters, known as Titans decimate and destroy entire cities and families with. Single flick of the wrist or walking over top of them literally.

This episode sets the foundation for what I know and assume will be Ana amazing comeback for Eren, Mikasa and the gang.  But damn these young kids have taken such enormous losses between episode one and two.  We also start to see that Erens desire to go beyond the wall is stupid and dangerous, may be the only way.

The writers of this anime and design are absolutely amazing in every way and seem to captivate and capture every detail so well.  I especially love the references to humanity as cattle in conjunction with them literally being in a wall making them contained cattle for the slaughter of the unstoppable titans.

Super excited to see Mikasa, Eren and the whole gang really get going in the scouts and get to crushing and defeating these group titans.
